Practical and effective, cast iron and polished steel have always been part of the fireplace tradition. Often dismissed as just 'Victorian', the use of cast iron inserts dates from the early 18th century. Elegant Georgian designs have a fresh contemporary feel. As casting techniques evolved, high Victorian inserts became more elaborate and more accessible to a wider public. Later, the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements adopted and stylised the use of polished steel through to the Art Deco era (1930s)
