Everyone loves a fire, especially if it's saving you money.

Efficient Gas Fires - 10 things you need to know.

1. Why an efficient fire? When North Sea gas was cheap and plentiful we didn't worry about putting a load of heat up the chimney. A Decorative Gas Fire with artificial coals usually loses 2/3 of the heat up the chimney (33% efficient)
   
   
2. Glass fronts increase effciency: Like a stove, this cuts out the draught up your chimney that takes all  your centrally heated room air away. It also cuts out the draught when the fire is not in use, saving money 24 hours a day. It also stops dirt falling onto your hearth and carpet. The efficiency of these gas fires can be 80-90%.
   
   
3. You dont need external air vents: If your gas fire burns more than 7kW of gas, regulations require a large permanently open air vent. This lets in a lot of cold air from outside. (Intentionally). Most new fires will allow you to close off that cold vent.
   
   
4. Gas prices and going up: Increases happening now. Most European gas comes from Russia. Gas and energy prices will go up again.
   
   
5. Choose a remote control fire: There are three options, manual control, slide control (lever on the side) and remote control. Don't go for manual control unless you enjoy getting on your knees and operating a knob 2" off the floor. Some remote controls automatically regulate the room temperature and can be programmed for specific times.
   
   
6. Use your central heating less: A good fire will replace your central heating for those chilly Autumn and Spring evenings, and will spend less on fuel.

9. Good Quality Brands: There are a lot of brands out there. Broadly, you get what you pay for. Two of the best products are Gazco E-Box and Paragon Focus. Both are made in the UK and are high quality, reliable fires. These are easy to use, and should give you a good 15 year life.
