Sandford Bathstone Fireplace

Sandford Bathstone Fireplace

Dream fireplace, hand carved in Bath stone, to complement an extensive refurbishment project.

This refurbishment of a gracious old property with layers of modern additions gave the opportunity to start from scratch.

Our clients wanted an impressive fireplace, about 65" wide, in materials that complemented the character of the house, and with a fire that would create a centre of attention. The chimney had an existing 7" steel flue, in good condition, but too small to allow an open fire. A stove is an aesthetically pleasing solution, as well as efficient. A Stovax Huntingdon 35 cast iron multi-fuel stove met the bill. The fireplace has extensive hand carved detail on the shelf and legs, with ‘pepper-pot’ detail at the base of the leg moulding.

Our work included:

  • Technical assessment of open fire vs. stove options,
  • Design of stone surround detailing,
  • Design drawings for approval,
  • Brick lining of chamber, using selected recovered bricks, pointed with lime mortar
  • Manufacture of fireplace, installation of fireplace and stove.
  • Project Reference: 6540
  • Typical Cost: £5,000 (2006) (See Note)
  • Surround Material: Hartham Park Bathstone
  • Hearth Material: Hartham Park Bathstone
  • Energy Rating: 7kW stove, 75% efficiency
